The case for optimism after Rio+20

More than anything, last week's Rio+20 summit has placed sustainable development on the global political agenda through at least fall 2013, according to observers. The conference recognized the viability of green economic policies and established a framework for identifying development goals, beefing up the United Nations Environment Programme, advancing initiatives to protect the Arctic and ending fossil fuel supports. The largest public- and private-sector commitments came from Asia. "I interviewed United Nations Foundation founder, media and restaurant entrepreneur Ted Turner at RioPluSocial last week. We discussed how sustainable development has changed since the first Rio Summit in 1992; how the media can keep sustainable development in the forefront; what global issue keeps him up at night; and, of course ... Captain Planet."

  • UNESCO sites in Mali are under threat by Islamists
The tombs of holy saints in Timbuktu and Gao designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites are in danger of being damaged or destroyed after Islamist fighters seized control of the northern Mali cities, according to the world body's cultural agency. Ansar Dine fighters, who share links with al-Qaida, have dislodged the Tuareg separatist fighters with whom they seized much of the country's north. • Political transition tops agenda of Syria meeting
United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said he was "optimistic" about Saturday's meeting, which has the goal of paving the way for political transition in Syria. However, Russia is seeking changes to the options presented the meeting. A report by a UN panel holds the Syrian regime primarily responsible for "an alarming scale" of human rights violations in recent months. • Microinsurance links profit and purpose for farmers
Microinsurance companies have been reaching out to farmers in developing countries, and nearly 500 million are insured against crop failure, among other adverse events, largely in India and China. One company, LeapFrog Investment, helps prop up the most reputable microinsurance companies -- merging profit with purpose. The Guardian (London) (6/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • U.S. mothers fall short on vaccinations
While mothers in the developing world are going to great lengths to have their children vaccinated against preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella and pertussis, many American mothers are delaying or refusing some or all vaccines recommended for young children. The irony cannot be ignored, writes KJ Dell'Antonia, especially as the Shot@Life campaign is appealing to American parents to support global vaccination. "Every child who has had all of her shots protects not just herself, but others around her," she writes. • Congolese women are shouldering undue burdens
In the South Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of women have few options for survival other than carrying heavy sacks of charcoal for miles at a time for use in heating and cooking -- and earning little. These women, effectively "human pack horses," bear additional burdens in a country already identified as the worst country in the world for women.
