June 20th, 2012 U.S. Shows Strong Commitment to Sustainable Development Your efforts to support our Rio+20 campaign paid off! We translated the support we received from thousands of petition signers like you into a broad coalition letter sent to President Obama urging him to attend Rio+20 and show strong commitment to climate change and sustainability. In our May Partner's Call on Rio+20 John Matuszak, a key State Department official organizing the U.S. delegation, heard our message on the importance of sustainable development and our demand for strong U.S. participation in Rio. Last week, the Obama Administration announced that it is sending Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to attend the Rio+20 Earth Summit, taking place June 20-22. Having the United States' chief diplomat attend this critical summit sends a signal both at home and abroad that this Administration is strongly committed to working with international partners to address food security, water, and energy issues for the needs of this and future generations. While Hillary's attendance is a great sign, the Summit's success depends on over 100 nations taking concrete steps to raise millions out of poverty while maintaining vital natural resources. To celebrate the upcoming journey to Rio, we're creating postcards, where we supply the picture and you supply your funniest greeting from Hillary. The best and most creative postcard greetings will be featured on our Facebook page daily from now until the end of the conference on June 22. Every action you take helps to build a national movement for you and Americans like you, who want the United States to take a responsible and cooperative role in the world. With all of our voices together, we can build the future we want here today. |
