June 27th, 2012 Lack of Rules on Global Arms Trade Is Bananas! Yes! I think it is "bananas" that Arms Trade is less regulated than bananas! | Dear Friend, did you know that guns, tanks, and bullets are easier to trade worldwide than bananas? Bananas have strict rules governing their trade in international markets, while weapons that contribute to armed conflict and human rights violations are not bound by international trade laws. Click here to halt the unregulated spread of weapons worldwide. From July 2-27, international leaders are coming together to negotiate the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). This treaty will stop the irresponsible transfer of ammunition and arms to nations that support terrorists and to countries where there is a high risk of weapons being used to violate human rights, like in Syria and Bahrain. The ATT is a common-sense measure that would make it more difficult for weapons to be sold on the black market and halt the flow of weapons to dangerous regimes. But in order for the treaty to have teeth, the United States needs to support stopping arms transfers to countries at high risk of using them to violate human rights; include all conventional weapons in the treaty like tanks, parts and bullets; and ensure that the treaty is enforceable, transparent and effective. Without these elements, the treaty will be as effective as trying to drive a car without wheels. Sign the petition for a strong Arms Trade Treaty and join the Global Solutions.org movement, started for Americans like you, who want the United States to take a responsible and cooperative role in the world. Thanks for all that you do, Amanda B. |
