World's leaders to take on global problems at UN this week

The 67th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly will be highlighted today by a briefing by Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, and on Tuesday and Wednesday with speeches by U.S. President Barack Obama and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, respectively. Nearly 120 heads of state and government are scheduled to attend, although solutions to the war in Syria and tensions over Iran's nuclear program, among other issues, are not expected. "The UN Summit is not all speechifying. Actual work will get done this week! One of the most important tasks before the General Assembly is coming up with a strategy for creating a new set of international development targets once the Millennium Development Goals expire in 2015."

  • Easy on the rhetoric, UN's Ban reportedly tells Iranian leader
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been asked by United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon to avoid "inflammatory rhetoric, counter-rhetoric and threats" during his scheduled speech this week before the General Assembly. Separately, the U.S. refused visas to 20 of about 160 Iranian government officials planning to attend the global forum, while an Iranian lawmaker has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of leaking classified information about the country's nuclear program to Israel. • Laying the groundwork for Pakistan polio vaccines
Vaccinating children against polio in urban slums remains a challenge in Pakistan, where three cases of infection were reported last week. Jackie Northam writes about traveling with a "social mobilizer" in Lahore as he tried to "lay the groundwork for the vaccinators," helping to "educate people and try to dispel some rumors that have prevented some parents from immunizing their children." • Russia's Gazprom under siege as gas prices fall
Exports of natural gas from Russia to Europe are in decline, spurring allegations of price-fixing and the sell-off of lucrative parts of energy giant Gazprom in what energy analysts say represents "the nationalization of costs and the privatization of profit." Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree establishing government control over how Gazprom responds to an anti-trust probe by the EU.
