Renewed calls for African seats on the UN Security Council

Foreign ministers from Africa have resumed calls for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. South African President Jacob Zuma told the world body that the council should add two permanent and two rotating seats for African nations, noting that much of the council's work is in Africa and that Africans are among the largest contributors to peacekeeping operations. A petition from Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico asking United Nations member states to revisit anti-drug strategies is being seen as a substantive step against the war on drugs. "Any discussion on a regional level or national level is important but does not have implications for the globe. This is actually global." Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of Grameen Bank, says de-linking business from profit allows people to better address social issues. "The advantage of social business is when you are free from the personal profit margin, then your logical profit you can dispense with, you can just look in a very clean, transparent way on the social issues," says Yunus, a board member of the United Nations Foundation.
