UN report: Increasing longevity presents challenges, especially for poor

More than 1 billion people will be older than 60 within a decade, which will present governments -- especially in the developing world -- with major policy challenges in health care, law and retirement, according to a report by the United Nations Population Fund and HelpAge International. "The social and economic implications of this phenomenon are profound, extending far beyond the individual older person and the immediate family, touching broader society and the global community in unprecedented ways," wrote UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the report's preface.
