Polio-eradication plan gets nearly 75% of funding up front

A $5.5 billion plan from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to eradicate polio by 2018 has received nearly three-quarters of that in funding pledges, including $1.8 billion from Bill Gates. "After millennia battling polio, this plan puts us within sight of the endgame," said Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization. "Ending polio forever, and saving 20 million children's lives through expanded vaccination programs does not require any medical miracles or breakthrough technologies. We are so very near the finish line on polio -- only a few hundred new infections last year, confined to just three endemic countries."
