UN: Libya is a "significant" source of weapons

Libya has become a key source of weapons for groups in Syria, Egypt, Mali and elsewhere, says a report by the United Nations Security Council's Group of Experts. "Illicit flows from the country are fueling existing conflicts in Africa and the Levant and enriching the arsenals of a range of non-state actors, including terrorist groups," the panel says. "Mr. Ban said he was greatly honoured to have an audience with the newly elected Pope [Francis], and said that His Holiness' choice of name -- after Saint Francis of Assisi -- was a powerful message for the many goals and principles shared by the United Nations."

Air pollution is killing more people than HIV/AIDS and malaria, says Kandeh Yumkella, director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. Officials said that clean energy could reduce such deaths by 50% by 2030. "If we increase access to clean energy ... the health benefits will be enormous," says Maria Neira of the World Health Organization. Reuters (4/9) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
