He relished the fight.
U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, a multimillionaire businessman who went to Washington in 1982 and served New Jersey for almost 30 years, approached political campaigns like a bare-knuckle brawl — and rarely backed down from battles while on the job.
"Politics is like prize fighting," he once said. "You get a few marks here or there, but you go on to continue your life and ready yourself for the next fight."
The five-term Democratic senator died today at age 89, his office announced this morning.
He died at 4:02 a.m. of complications from viral pneumonia at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell, his office said in a statement.
"Sen. Lautenberg was a dedicated public servant who fought vigorously for the people of New Jersey, "state Senate President Steve Sweeney said in a statement. "He leaves behind an amazing legacy of pushing for the rights of the working poor and middle class. While a man of means, he never, ever lost sight of helping working people. He will be missed. We have lost a true leader."
Lautenberg is survived by his wife, Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg; six children and their spouses, Ellen Lautenberg and Doug Hendel, Nan and Joe Morgart, Josh and Christina Lautenberg, Lisa and Doug Birer, Danielle Englebardt and Stuart Katzoff, Lara Englebardt Metz and Corey Metz; and 13 grandchildren.
Lautenberg's death was first reported by The Record.
