Air pollution kills millions each year, WHO says
Outdoor and indoor air pollution accounted for 7 million deaths in 2012, says a World Health Organization report. Most of the deaths occurred in western Pacific and Southeast Asian countries where cookstoves and open fires contribute to unsafe air quality. "Cleaning up the air we breathe prevents noncommunicable diseases as well as reduces disease risks among women and vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly," says Dr. Flavia Bustreo, WHO assistant director general of family, women and children's health.
