Top of the Agenda: Iran Annulment Rejected
Iran's Guardian Council, the powerful political body charged with certifying the country's electoral results, today rejected opposition party requests that Iran's recent disputed presidential poll be annulled. A spokesman for the Guardian Council said on state television that officials had found evidence of "no major fraud or breach in the election" (BBC). http://m1e.net/
Meanwhile, news reports suggest Iran's government has continued to step up its efforts to crack down on protestors, many of whom swarmed Tehran and other cities in the days following the vote. The Guardian says the government today and yesterday used teargas and fired weapons on demonstrators. http://m1e.net/
Meanwhile, Iran's government, which has accused foreign governments of seeking to meddle with the country's election results, today singled out Britain for criticism (FT). http://m1e.net/
Analysis:
In a new interview, Iran expert Farideh Farhi says a clear victory by either side is unlikely, and to assume so is "unrealistic" and "dangerous." http://m1e.net/
CFR's Michael Gerson argues in an op-ed that the Obama administration should have harshly criticized the Iranian regime for the brutal crackdown on protestors. http://m1e.net/

PACIFIC RIM: China Military Talks
Senior defense officials from the United States and China are meeting in Beijing for two days of talks expected to focus on several recent naval confrontations between the two countries in the South China Sea and the issue of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests (BBC). http://m1e.net/

AEROSPACE: The European airplane manufacturer Airbus today rolled out its first aircraft assembled at a new plant in China. Bloomberg says Airbus is attempting to gain market share in China, the world's second largest market for airplanes. http://m1e.net/
SOUTH & CENTRAL ASIA: Pakistan Killing
A Pakistani Taliban leader, Qari Zainuddin, who had recently criticized Baitullah Mehsud, the group's head of command in Pakistan was shot dead today, reportedly by one of his own guards. Al-Jazeera says the killing reflects a "deepening of divisions" within Pakistan's Taliban. http://m1e.net/
New York Times reports Zainuddin's death comes as a serious blow to the Pakistani government, which had supported him as a counter to Mehsud in its campaign against the Taliban. http://m1e.net/
AFGHANISTAN: A suicide bomber today struck a U.S. military convoy in Ghazni, Afghanistan, killing two people (Quqnoos). http://m1e.net/
AFRICA: Somalia Emergency
Somalia's interim president declared a state of emergency after at least twelve people were killed in clashes in the capital, Mogadishu, as fighting between Islamist rebels and pro-government troops continued to rage (Garowe). http://m1e.net/
KENYA: A group of veterans from Kenya's independence struggle of the 1950s and 1960s lodged a lawsuit against the British government, claiming human rights abuses (BBC). http://m1e.net/
AMERICAS: U.S. Abandons Spy Satellites
The White House announced it would abandon a controversial spy satellite program initiated by the Bush administration after Democratic lawmakers protested the program could lead to excessive domestic spying (WSJ). http://m1e.net/
GITMO: A group of ethnic Uighur Chinese being held at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay said they would refuse to relocate to the small Pacific nation of Palau on fears that they might be transferred back to China, where they fear their rights would be violated (FT). http://m1e.net/
EUROPE: Britain Picks Conservative Speaker
Following major losses for Britain's Labour party in recent elections, London's parliament today picked John Bercow, a conservative, to serve as the speaker of the House of Commons. Bercow's predecessor Michael Martin resigned last month over an expenses scandal (Reuters). http://m1e.net/
FRANCE: Paris set up a commission to investigate the extent to which burkas, an Islamic garment which covers women from head to toe, are worn in France. The move follows comments from French President Nicolas Sarkozy that the garment reduces women's dignity by "depriv[ing] women of identity" (BBC). http://m1e.net/
