Top of the Agenda: Iran Annulment Rejected

Iran's Guardian Council, the powerful political body charged with certifying the country's electoral results, today rejected opposition party requests that Iran's recent disputed presidential poll be annulled. A spokesman for the Guardian Council said on state television that officials had found evidence of "no major fraud or breach in the election" (BBC). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-EEW7R.0SbZmfI%404364145-MmayEJ5GVT6Tc Yesterday the council acknowledged that the number of votes recorded in fifty Iranian cities surpassed the number of eligible voters in those cities (NYT). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-yvtPnuzNjj/Gk%404364146-/cTpn0FdfF23s

Meanwhile, news reports suggest Iran's government has continued to step up its efforts to crack down on protestors, many of whom swarmed Tehran and other cities in the days following the vote. The Guardian says the government today and yesterday used teargas and fired weapons on demonstrators. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-V/.qImVLzqZ76%404364147-R8iK.r6.LC4Nc The New York Daily News reports a sweeping technology crackdown led by Iran's government has also worked to stymie the protests. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-nzxtyzTCZrH2I%404364148-5lLmBNPS7B.us All the same, Euronews reports protests continued into today. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-/cLBKluaHvBPg%404364149-ATiYkhEkS0ZNM

Meanwhile, Iran's government, which has accused foreign governments of seeking to meddle with the country's election results, today singled out Britain for criticism (FT). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-KdcUygtjUOaMI%404364150-DPl84DzmLf4CI

Analysis:

In a new interview, Iran expert Farideh Farhi says a clear victory by either side is unlikely, and to assume so is "unrealistic" and "dangerous." http://m1e.net/c?101077382-C1Guvcb.QPG6Y%404364151-kuq8dnTL.Cfek

CFR's Michael Gerson argues in an op-ed that the Obama administration should have harshly criticized the Iranian regime for the brutal crackdown on protestors. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-oSgG24rrrS4iU%404364152-LHCCaKjKI1y.o
However, CFR's Leslie Gelb argues in a separate op-ed that Iran should be left to Iranians. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-LbMAKcYkyGXYk%404364153-d1eA/xlqIPovo
