RESPONSE TO STATE SENATOR LUZ ROBLES

"Another False Start on Immigration"

Salt Lake City, UTAH – Yesterday State Senator Luz Robles represented an immigration bill that would allow the State of Utah to take over the issue of immigration. We commend Senator Luz Robles for her efforts in finding a solution to our nation's immigration problem. The main issue at hand is that immigration has been, is and will always be a federal issue that can only be solved at the national level.

Tony Yapias, Director of Proyecto Latino de Utah said "Senator Robles is well intentioned, but we believe that her proposal will not work and is not practical. None of the benefits provisions would work if the federal government does not grant authority. Other states such as Colorado and Arizona had attempted in the past to obtain a federal waiver and were not granted"

Yapias further stated "We are concerned that this approach gives undocumented immigrants false hope. Past proposals have done exactly that"

Senator Robles and Representative Sandstrom should know that the only way to solve the "illegal immigration" issue is at the federal level. We believe that all of us should focus our resources and efforts in working together with our Congressional leaders to address this important matter in Washington D.C. We call on our state representatives and other officials to urge action at the federal level.
