UN Security Council imposes sweeping sanctions on Libya

Libya is facing an arms embargo and asset freeze while its leader, Col. Moammar Gadhafi, is facing prosecution in the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, as the country continues to violently put down protests that have carried into their second week. The UN Security Council voted unanimously Saturday to impose the sanctions, which Gadhafi declared "null and void." • U.S. Republicans target UN funding in budget proposals
Efforts to slash U.S. funding for a variety of UN projects are afoot as a Republican-led House seeks to scale back overall federal spending. The efforts hark back to disinformation campaigns against the world body that have long circulated in the United States, according to Boston Globe columnist Reneé Loth. UN Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth noted, "These are the kind of extreme measures I don't think we've seen for years." The appearance of General Than Shwe and other junta leaders on television dressed in women's attire has many in Myanmar questioning whether the country's military rulers are practicing yadaya, black magic, against their political opponents.
