| - Rio+20 weighs alternatives to GDP as indicator
The role of gross domestic product as an indicator of well-being and sustainable development is called into question by a draft agreement on the agenda for the Rio+20 summit. The world's biggest aid agencies, including the United Nations, are increasingly turning to local suppliers to alleviate the hunger crisis in the Sahel region of Africa -- a shift from a past of getting food aid from U.S. or European suppliers. Local supplies mean less stockpiling in fewer warehouses and jobs for those in affected areas. "With local production, we have a more reliable and efficient way of getting these life-saving products to children who need them most," said UNICEF spokeswoman Melanie Sharpe. The Globe and Mail (Toronto) (6/12) - Marketing clean cookstoves to the end users
Researchers at Stanford University have been studying why the world's poorest can be reluctant to switch to safer, low-cost clean cookstoves. For instance, in Bangladesh, "people know their cookstoves are bad, but they don't think cookstoves are the most important problem they face," said Grant Miller, a faculty member at the university. "You need to get inside the heads of the users and figure out what they really want and value -- even if unrelated to smoke and health -- and then give it to them," he added. The security councils of the United Nations and African Union on Wednesday condemned the recent coups in Guinea Bissau and Mali. The councils also raised concern over the threat of transnational crime rings to the Sahel region and West Africa. The bodies also said that sea piracy threatens Somalia's move to democracy.
