Dialogue with NGOs
"Passing the Torch"
A dialogue of the President of the UN General Assembly with civil society
I have the pleasure to inform you that we will convene a meeting with NGOs on 10 September 2012. The President of the General Assembly would like to take stock of this year\\\'s work through an open dialogue about opportunities for civil society participation in the work of the UN.
In our first meeting at the beginning of the 66th Session of the General Assembly, the President shared with you the four key priorities that would set the main themes of his Presidency. NGOs participation is an essential instrument for pursuing the core priorities of the General Assembly and of the wider UN Agenda. Inclusive social development, environmental sustainability, inclusive economic development, and peace and security call for more effective and stronger partnerships. His office set the goal to ensure adequate civil society space and to take steps to improve it. It has been his firm commitment to work closely with the NGO community, to further our common goals towards a safer and more sustainable world.
We will convene again in 10 September to assess this year's efforts, through a constructive dialogue about our accomplishments, as well as what still needs to be done. The President of the General Assembly has witnessed the ways in which the work of the organization and the quality of its deliberations have benefitted from a vibrant and diverse range of civil society groups, notably during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. This year has strengthened the partnership between the General Assembly and civil society, and has demonstrated what we can achieve and deliver when we come together.
There is still much to be done. We must continue to build upon our efforts and continue to move forward jointly to reach our common goals. This dialogue represents a strategic opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between civil society and the United Nations. We look forward to your participation. warm regards to all, Hanifa
