"Goya has groundbreaking event in Jersey City"
By Wendy Oliveras, NJ Latina Entrepreneur and Author of "Let's Play SHESS"
What an honor it was to attend Goya's groundbreaking event in Jersey City
on the morning of September 5, 2012. This celebration introduced Goya's
decision to build its brand new 615,000 square foot headquarters and
distribution center on County Road by Spring 2014. Note that Goya was
started in Manhattan in 1936, but moved to Secaucus, NJ in 1974. Its new
warehouse space will include 577,000 square feet plus 40,000 square feet of
office space. Goya will keep its current warehouse open in Secaucus, NJ
and will use the facility for manufacturing.
I felt so proud to sit amongst such prominent political leaders, including
Gov. Chris Christie, Councilwoman Nidia R. Lopez of Jersey City, and other
well-known officials, President and family of Goya. As a Latina business
owner and resident of Jersey City for the past 20 years, having Goya in
Jersey City is a win-win situation. Goya's headquarters will help to
generate at least 80 jobs and enhance its presence in the State of New
Jersey. This is so exciting!
Not only is Goya Foods, Inc. the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the
United States, but celebrated its 75th anniversary last year. Goya is the
forefront Hispanic-owned business, which represents a perfect example of
what sustainability and success is while giving back to its communities and
the world. For example, Goya awards student academic scholarships, is
recognized by President Barack Obama for its success and commitment to the
American dream, donated one million pounds of food through United Way to
fight hunger, as well as accepted the "Icon of Industry Award" in 2010 at
the USHCC 32nd Annual National Convention Chairman's Gala. It is no wonder
Goya is so loved and successful here and abroad.
I wish to congratulate la familia Unanue for its 76 years of commitment to
its employees, customers and the rest of the world. Thanks for raising the
bar and setting such a great example of what being a successful
Hispanic-owned company truly represents. Kudos to the Unanue family and
Goya!
