UN agencies appeal for food-crisis intervention

United Nations food agencies warned today that swift action is needed to avert a catastrophic food crisis that could affect tens of millions of the world's poor. Nestlé is lobbying the U.S. and EU to reduce their biofuel quotas, while three UN agencies -- the World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization and International Fund for Agricultural Development -- urged governments of developing countries to increase assistance to small-scale farmers, women and children. The August participation of 31 bloggers as part of Shot@Life's inaugural blog relay, Blogust, raised enough money -- through donations from comments -- to pay for vaccinations for 10,000 children against deadly, yet preventable diseases in developing countries. "I have bookmarked Blogust on my computer, so I can keep coming back to these posts when I need inspiration," writes Elizabeth Gore, executive director of global partnerships for the United Nations Foundation.
