The number of deaths of children younger than 5 declined by nearly half from 1991 to 2011, with about 6.9 million deaths last year, according to UNICEF. Anthony Lake, head of the UN agency, said the reduction represented "significant success" in the battle against child mortality, yet emphasized that there is "unfinished business." He said, "Millions of children under 5 are still dying each year from largely preventable causes for which there are proven, affordable interventions." Four-fifths of such deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
