The 2012 theme is "Agricultural cooperatives - key to feeding the world," which highlights the role of cooperatives in improving food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger. International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 17 October 2012 The theme for this year\'s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty - "Working together out of poverty" - highlights the need for a truly global anti-poverty alliance, one in which both developed and developing countries participate actively. 17 October presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard, and a moment to recognize that poor people are the first ones to fight against poverty. UN Reports "Ageing in the Twenty-First Century: A Celebration and a Challenge" published by UNFPA and HelpAge International Coinciding with the 2012 commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons, UNFPA and HelpAge International have published a new report: Ageing in the Twenty-First Century: A Celebration and A Challenge. This report analyses the current situation of older persons and reviews progress in policies and actions taken by governments and other stakeholders since the Second World Assembly on Ageing in implementing the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of an ageing world. It identifies gaps and provides recommendations for the way forward to ensure a society for all ages in which both young and old are given the opportunity to contribute to development and share in its benefits. UNDP launches "Powerful synergies: gender equality, economic development and environmental sustainability" On 27 September, a high-level event was organized by UNDP on the launch of the publication Powerful synergies: gender equality, economic development and environmental sustainability. The publication is a collection of evidence-based papers by scholars and practitioners that explore the interconnection between gender equality and sustainable development across a range of sectors and global development issues such as energy, health, education, and urbanization. UNCTAD\'s Trade and Development Report 2012 Last week, UNCTAD issued the 2012 edition of its Trade and Development Report, subtitled "Policies for inclusive and balanced growth," which reviews trends in the global economies and explores the links between income distribution, growth and development. The report focuses especially on income inequality, asserting that reducing widening gaps in wealth and income will not only have social benefits, but will also lead to higher economic growth. Civil Society - UN Dialogue on Post-2015 Processes held with High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda On 24 September, a dialogue was held between civil society, UN officials and members of the Secretary-General\'s High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. With more than 200 civil society participants in attendance, and the event featured lively discussion between the UN panelists, members of the High-level Panel, and interventions from the audience as well as those engaging in the dialogue online. More information is available online. New NGLS e-Roundup "Rio+20: A new direction for a more sustainable future?" The UN Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20"), the largest UN conference ever, opened on 20 June 2012, gathering 191 UN Member States and observers, including 100 Heads of State and Government, about 10,000 civil society representatives, and more than 30,000 other participants (UN officials, parliamentarians, mayors, chief executive officers, media representatives, etc). This NGLS eRoundup aims to provide an overview of the main happenings at and around the Rio+20 Conference; it also looks forward, exploring how the outcomes of Rio can be expanded upon to bring the urgently needed change to make this world more sustainabl! e, and to prepare for an inclusive post-2015 development framework. First ever High-level Meeting on the Rule of Law On 24 September, the UN General Assembly held its first ever High-level Meeting (HLM) on the Rule of Law, where world leaders urged States to recommit to the rule of law as a fundamental factor in preventing war. The meeting, which brought together Member States and civil society represented at the highest level, also sought to highlight the essential link between the rule of law at the national and international levels and economic growth, sustainable development and the eradication of poverty and hunger. UN-DESA launches a new Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform In the follow-up to Rio+20, a new website, the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform (SDKP), has been launched by the Division for Sustainable Development of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA). Ensuring continuity with the former Rio+20 website, which is no longer being updated, this platform gathers all available information regarding the past nineteen years of normative and analytical work of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), the intergovernmental processes on sustainable development governance as well as the Rio+20 preparatory process and follow-up. Call for inputs for a report on the participation of people living in poverty   The UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, is collecting inputs for a report on the human rights approach to participation of persons living in poverty in decisions that affect their lives, to be submitted at the 23rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2013. The Special Rapporteur would particularly welcome submissions from women\'s organizations that have worked with women living in poverty to promote, support and enable their participation in the design and implementation of monitoring of national/local policy or development interventions.   More information is available online. Domestic workers will see their basic labour rights protected one year from now With the ratification of ILO Convention 189 on "Decent Work for Domestic Workers" by the Philippines, approximately 100 million domestic workers across the globe will see their basic labour rights extended and protected one year from now - when the Convention enters into force.
