Calvin: Prioritize improving the lives of every woman, every child

The health of women and children should remain a global development priority because it "isn't just the right thing to do; it's also the smart thing to do," writes Kathy Calvin, head of the United Nations Foundation. Child mortality is declining, she adds, but more needs to be done to achieve Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 by 2015 -- prospects for which are improved because of the Every Woman Every Child initiative. • MHealth gains in U.S. could help poor countries
The field of mHealth has advanced by tapping into the more than 6 billion cellphones worldwide -- 76% of which are in developing nations -- and "establishing emergency triage systems, sending medication adherence reminders, enabling home-based antenatal care, tracking community immunization and dispatching mass announcements detailing satellite clinic schedules and locations," writes Nadim Mahmud, a co-founder of the nonprofit Medic Mobile. Developments in mobile health in the U.S. could serve as field tests for the poor countries. CNN (10/1) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The World Bank should suspend financing for major land deals for six months while it reviews its policies to ensure that it is not inadvertently encouraging land grabs in the developing world, says the global charity Oxfam in a report. Over the past decade, agricultural lands equivalent to eight times the size of the U.K. have been snatched up -- mainly in poor countries -- for the production of crops used to make biofuels instead of food, an Oxfam analysis reports. The United Nations Security Council will likely be asked to approve an armed intervention in Mali by African troops to oust Islamist rebels linked to al-Qaida.
