Top of the Agenda: Swine Flu's Spread
The United States reported the first swine flu death outside Mexico today, and Germany and Austria both reported cases of infection, as world leaders stepped up their efforts to combat the disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a twenty-three month old child died of swine flu in Texas (ABC News). http://m1e.net/

The Washington Post reports that one of the main tasks facing scientists is to gain a better understanding of variations in the swine flu virus as it has spread throughout the world. http://m1e.net/

PACIFIC RIM: N. Korea Threats
Pyongyang threatened to carry out nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests if the United Nations does not apologize for its condemnation of a recent rocket launch (Yonhap). http://m1e.net/
- CFR's Scott Snyder says in a new interview that questions about a possible regime succession make negotiating with North Korea more difficult at the moment. http://m1e.net/
CHINA-JAPAN: The Global Times previews two-day meetings between Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and his Chinese counterpart. The Chinese paper interviews Aso and says his attitude exudes optimism about the future of Chinese-Japanese relations. http://m1e.net/
SOUTH & CENTRAL ASIA: Pakistan Fighting
Dawn reports Pakistan's military killed over fifty militants in the struggle for a strategically important town in the district of Buner, which the troops eventually seized. http://m1e.net/
SRI LANKA: The foreign ministers of France and Britain both urged the Sri Lankan government to call a truce in its war against Tamil Tiger separatists, following severe recent violence (al-Jazeera)
AFRICA: Kenya Political Dispute
The East Africa Standard says Kenya has achieved "Order! Order! At last" after a dramatic intervention by the country's house speaker to resolve a political dispute between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who hail from rival parties. http://m1e.net/
DRC: The BBC reports an indicted war criminal and former rebel leader, Gen. Bosco Ntaganda, has played a major role helping the United Nations conduct its peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. http://m1e.net/
AMERICAS: Mexico City's Clampdown
The Miami Herald looks at how life has come to a virtual standstill in Mexico City, given government efforts to contain the swine flu. With schools, restaurants, movie theaters, and other public venues all closed, the article quotes one resident saying "we're like caged lions." http://m1e.net/
PERU-VENEZUELA: Peru's president said the goal of offering political asylum to a major rival of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez was not to disturb relations with Venezuela (El Universal). http://m1e.net/
EUROPE: Russia-Ukraine Meetings
Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko says she has successfully solved Ukraine's gas supply disputes with Russia at meetings with her Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin (Ria Novosti). http://m1e.net/
FRANCE-SPAIN: In an address to the Spanish parliament yesterday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a joint summit to tackle terrorism, including the Basque separatist group ETA, as well as drug trafficking and illegal immigration (AFP). http://m1e.net/
