Fears that the recent outbreak of swine flu in Mexico and a handful of other countries could morph into a full-scale international pandemic spread yesterday following the World Health Organization'

The number of reported deaths from the outbreak rose to 152 in Mexico, and cases of the virus have now been detected in five U.S. states, Canada, Spain, Britain, New Zealand, and Israel. South Korea also reported a probable case.
The Washington Post reports signs have emerged that the outbreak could be beginning to take a toll on the already fragile global economy--yesterday, the Post reports, oil prices, the Mexican peso, and airline stocks all plunged. http://m1e.net/

IRAQ: The U.S. military said it was "deeply saddened" for raids in southern Iraq this past Sunday that led to the deaths of two civilians. YEMEN: The Yemen Times reports a deadline by which Yemen's president promised to repatriate Yemeni detainees in the Guantanamo Bay detention facility has now passed. http://m1e.net/
PACIFIC RIM: U.S.-Chinese Business
Chinese and U.S. firms signed thirty-two new trade and investment contracts yesterday following meetings between the two countries' top commerce officials (Xinhua). http://m1e.net/
KAESONG: South Korea's unification minister said demands from North Korea for wage increases at the jointly run North Korea-South Korea industrial complex at Kaesong could threaten the complex's business viability (Yonhap). http://m1e.net/
SOUTH & CENTRAL ASIA: Sri Lanka-UN
Al-Jazeera reports Sri Lanka's government has denied a UN aid mission access to battered areas of northern Sri Lanka, where government troops have been fighting Tamil Tiger rebels. http://m1e.net/

EUROPE: Daimler-Chrysler Negotiations
Reuters reports the German automaker Daimler agreed to give up its 19.9 percent stake in the U.S. automaker Chrysler as Chrysler's primary owner, the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, makes last-ditch efforts to prevent Chrysler from falling into bankruptcy. http://m1e.net/
