NATIONAL SECURITY: Obama v. Cheney
Yesterday the political battles over the closure of Guantanamo detention center heated up. President Obama delivered a speech laying out in general terms his plan to close Guantanamo and his argument for balancing transparency with national security. Former Vice President Dick Cheney immediately followed up in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, suggesting one aspect of Obama's plan--bringing Guantanamo prisoners to U.S. soil--may never pass congressional muster. The speeches came in the wake of a recent decision by Senate Democrats refusing to release funds for the closure of Guantanamo.
