Africa Industrialization Day 2012
“Accelerating Industrialization for
Boosting Intra-Africa Trade”
21 November 2012, 11:00am - 1:00pm
Conference Room 6, North Lawn Building (NLB), UN HQ, New York
As the UN’s specialized agency for promoting industrial development for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, UNIDO is celebrating this year’s Africa Industrialization Day on 21 November 2012.
A special feature of the celebration is the high-level interactive panel discussion on the theme ‘Accelerating Industrialization for Boosting Intra-Africa Trade’. The panel will discuss key elements of a new industrial policy framework for Africa against the backdrop of a new global environment for industrialization.
The celebration includes statements by the President of the General Assembly (invited) and on behalf of the Secretary-General, the Director-General of UNIDO, along with statements by the African Group and the African Union.
Under-Secretary General Maged Abdelaziz, UN Special Adviser on Africa, will moderate the interesting panel discussion with high-level speakers from UN agencies, academia and the private sector. Confirmed speakers include Modest Mero (Permanent Mission of Tanzania), Steve McDonald (Wilson Center), Anthony Carroll (Center for Strategic and International Studies) and Michael Clark (UNCTAD).
The panel will also present the findings of the recent UNIDO-UNCTAD Economic Development in Africa Report, entitled “Fostering Industrial Development in Africa in the New Global Environment”.
Representatives of the Permanent Missions to the UN, UN agencies, civil society and academia are encouraged to participate. Light lunch and refreshments will be served.
