Ban laments killings of anti-polio workers; ninth victim dies

The shooting deaths this week in Pakistan of health workers helping administer polio vaccines to children were "cruel, senseless and inexcusable," said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The death toll among health workers -- six of whom were women, and almost all of whom were volunteers -- rose to nine after one succumbed today to wounds from being shot in the head in the city of Peshawar. The gunmen on motorbikes who carried out the attacks remain unidentified, but Taliban militants in the country long have threatened anti-polio workers. • UN's Amos engages in a bit of #Twiplomacy
UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos, in a far-ranging Twitter interview, said that while the conflict in Syria is likely to grab headlines in the coming months, "emergencies in the Sahel, Yemen, DRC [Democratic Republic of Congo], Sudan" would be "equally critical." Among her most pressing concerns, tweeted Amos, is "trying to protect vulnerable women children." AlertNet/AlertNet News blog (12/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Syrian war has become "overtly sectarian," UN says
The civil war in Syria has undergone a "clear shift" in recent months, assuming "overtly sectarian" overtones as opposition fighters align themselves with specific religious and ethnic groups, according to a report slated for release today by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Jeffrey Feltman, the world body's under-secretary-general for political affairs, told the Security Council that "the destruction of Syria will be the likely outcome" if a political solution is not reached. • The military and aid: At what price cooperation?
Aid workers and soldiers are working together with greater frequency as the role of the military in providing humanitarian assistance continues to expand during conflicts and disasters. But does such cooperation risk tarnishing the perception of those in need? Will health clinics be seen as safe or neutral spaces? IRINNews.org (12/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Once-lagging economies are envy of recession-mired West
This series by The Guardian spotlights developing countries currently undergoing booms in growth that could vault them past wealthier nations in economic might within decades. "As the West remains mired in gloom and even the BRICs start to plateau, attention is turning to this group of countries, many of which not so long ago were rudely dismissed as basket cases," writes economics editor Larry Elliott. • 2012's best lines in global development
High-ranking officials from various United Nations agencies figure in this list of 15 memorable quotes from the past year in global development. Jan Eliasson, deputy secretary-general, said, "We usually say there is always a 'Plan B,' but there is no 'Planet B,' " while Michel Sidibé, head of UNAIDS, gains mention for this remark: "In the future, regional and global power and national stability will be determined not by who controls arms, but by who controls access to medicines." In coming years, the number of coastal megacities at risk of storm surges and flooding is expected to rise significantly. In terms of assets, the risks faced by low-lying cities such as Tokyo, New Orleans and Amsterdam are projected to be surpassed by the fast-growing metropolises of Calcutta, Shanghai, Mumbai, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. "The landscape of vulnerability has changed spectacularly," says Vinod Thomas of the Asian Development Bank. Yale Environment 360 (12/17) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

In a phone call, U.S. President Barack Obama told Rwandan President Paul Kagame that the latter's ongoing support for armed rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is "inconsistent with Rwanda's desire for stability and peace." The conflict was the focus of discussions Wednesday among United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and leaders of Rwanda, Uganda and other African states, while DR Congo President Joseph Kabila was seeking a greater role for UN peacekeepers.
