UN analysis identifies world's economic trends

The slow pace of growth in major developed economies is likely to hold down until 2017 the recovery of jobs lost during the recession of 2008 and 2009, according to a United Nations report. The effects of a combination of crises -- the so-called "fiscal cliff" in the U.S., the ongoing European debt crisis and a marked economic slowdown in China -- could spark a new global recession, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs said Tuesday. [Statement] CEO Kathy Calvin on Health Worker Attacks in #Pakistan: http://bit.ly/R3Qr0B"

@UNFoundation

"Polio will not be eradicated globally until Pakistan is no longer a polio endemic country. These murdered health workers were doing their job in the service of children, but also in the service of humanity."

  • Polio drive paused in Pakistan amid new attacks
    Two more health workers were shot and killed today while administering polio vaccines in Pakistan, bringing the death toll to eight -- mostly women -- over three days of a vaccination campaign now suspended by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Another health worker was injured in today's attacks, while at least five were reportedly fired upon by unidentified gunmen, but escaped. • UN in $1.5 billion humanitarian appeal for Syria
    The United Nations is seeking $1.5 billion to help millions of Syrians -- from the hundreds of thousands in refugee camps in neighboring countries, to those still within the country -- in what the UN called its largest short-term appeal ever. "Unless these funds come quickly, we will not be able to fully respond to the lifesaving needs of civilians who flee Syria every hour of the day," said Panos Moumtzis, regional envoy for the UN refugee agency. • Time to let go of dream of global climate deal?
    Top climate researchers are casting doubt on the ability of the international community to strike a timely deal that would limit global warming. Admitting that "the dream of a global deal is over" would "create space for new momentum," argues environmental historian Frank Uekötter. • New energy-efficient ceiling fan packs vast potential
    An Indian manufacturer has developed a new ceiling fan that uses less than half the electricity used by the 350 million ceiling fans currently in use throughout the country, holding out the potential of reducing the electricity needs in a nation stricken with rolling blackouts. But can average Indians afford the $55 price tag? Forbes (12/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Muslim Brotherhood to gain Mubarak-like powers
    Opposition in Egypt to an Islamist-backed draft constitution appears to be abating. As the document was poised for passage in the run-up to a second round of voting, "seldom has any nation confronted so momentous a question at a time of such polarization," writes The Economist. "In outline the new draft differs little from the constitution that prevailed until the fall of Hosni Mubarak's regime," the publication reported, adding that it would give the Muslim Brotherhood power similar to the power Mubarak had.
