Many in the U.S. mistakenly believe that the UNESCO World Heritage concept was developed by foreigners, is United Nations-controlled and gives UNESCO sovereignty over sites it alone picks, writes Jonathan Tourtellot. The consequences are serious for the American economy because the World Heritage tag boosts tourism revenue, and the U.S. only has 21 sites in comparison with France and Mexico, which have 38 and 31 sites, respectively.
