What is next for polio vaccinations?

Experts say the shooting deaths last week of nine health workers in Pakistan could prove to be a "game changer" in global efforts to eradicate polio. An estimated 3.5 million children did not receive oral vaccines after the United Nations and other agencies suspended immunization campaigns. While vaccinations continued in some parts of the country, some field workers are rethinking their involvement. "This is a major incident that will make us think of where we go from here," says Elias Durry, of the World Health Organization. "As more attention shifts to the ICC, it is important to remember the contributions these tribunals have made to international criminal law as well as their weaknesses in order to advance the cause of holding people accountable for the worst crimes."

  • S. Sudan military hinders UN peacekeeping
South Sudan's military shot down a United Nations peacekeeping helicopter over the region of Jonglei on Friday, killing the four Russian crewmembers on board. Russia has called for an investigation and punishment for those responsible for the downing of the helicopter, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said was clearly marked. "Since September of last year, there have been repeated incidents by the [military], including shooting at UN aircraft, as well as some direct threats to UN peacekeepers," said UN peacekeeping spokesman Kieran Dwyer. • The toll of fake medication counted in lost lives
Counterfeit drugs manufactured in Asia look so much like the real thing they are even fooling health professionals in Africa, where the fight against malaria is being compromised by phony pills that also purport to be emergency contraception or AIDS medication. "[S]everal recent studies warn that as many as one-third of malaria drugs in Uganda and Tanzania are fake or substandard, with most believed to originate in China or India," writes Kathleen E. McLaughlin. The Guardian (London) (12/23), The Guardian (London) (12/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

A study suggests that the ice sheet in Western Antarctica is melting at nearly double the previously suspected rate, constituting "one of the strongest warming signals on Earth," according to co-author Andrew Monaghan. Swifter warming could mean an accelerated rise in sea levels, according to researchers. BBC (12/23), AlertNet/Reuters (12/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
