Top of the Agenda: British Cabinet Shuffle

A radical shake-up of Britain's cabinet continued today with new high-level resignations amidst intensifying calls for Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down. This morning British Defense Secretary John Hutton quit his post, the fourth senior cabinet minister to leave office this week (Telegraph). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-uaBOlMMDsgZCA%404310069-e9M7IXvf/2aB2 Yesterday evening James Purnell, the Work and Pensions Secretary, also stepped down and called on Prime Minister Brown to "stand aside" for the good of his Labour Party (BBC). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-5C0Fhxa2yaEIk%404310070-xlQFXc7jn/wGI

British local and European elections have brought the country's political turmoil to a head. The results of the local elections are expected out today, and the European poll results are due out on Sunday. Brown's Labour Party faces the prospect of major losses in both votes, several news sources have reported.

The Financial Times reports Alistair Darling, Britain's finance minister, has fought off Brown's attempts to replace him after a "dramatic power struggle." http://m1e.net/c?101077382-utePslQ2URzO.%404310071-Nw9SPwDzJIPps The article says Darling remaining in office represents a further sign of Brown's diminished political clout. Still, the Economist says Brown's position has been "shored up somewhat" by the fact that other major rivals within the Labour Party haven't as yet followed Purnell's lead and called on the prime minister to leave office. http://m1e.net/c?101077382-8r5X1CSpgkmw.%404310072-39MUVP9qfoNug

MIDDLE EAST: Obama-Israel Relations

Haaretz reports U.S. President Barack Obama's administration reached out to Israel following his speech yesterday addressing the Muslim world. Israel's government, for its part, praised Obama's speech to Muslims but said that Israel's security was its primary concern (Reuters). http://m1e.net/c?101077382-WGMLJRaXc8c/Q%404310074-I1orRKne7CCK%2e
