Top of the Agenda: British Cabinet Shuffle
A radical shake-up of Britain's cabinet continued today with new high-level resignations amidst intensifying calls for Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down. This morning British Defense Secretary John Hutton quit his post, the fourth senior cabinet minister to leave office this week (Telegraph). http://m1e.net/
British local and European elections have brought the country's political turmoil to a head. The results of the local elections are expected out today, and the European poll results are due out on Sunday. Brown's Labour Party faces the prospect of major losses in both votes, several news sources have reported.
The Financial Times reports Alistair Darling, Britain's finance minister, has fought off Brown's attempts to replace him after a "dramatic power struggle." http://m1e.net/
MIDDLE EAST: Obama-Israel Relations
Haaretz reports U.S. President Barack Obama's administration reached out to Israel following his speech yesterday addressing the Muslim world. Speaking in Germany today, Obama said the "moment is now" for pushing forward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. http://m1e.net/
Israel's government, for its part, praised Obama's speech to Muslims but said that Israel's security was its primary concern (Reuters). http://m1e.net/
WOMEN: The Arab News reports women across the Muslim world consider Obama's speech, in which he said their choices should be personal, as "nothing short of a blessing." http://m1e.net/
PACIFIC RIM: Kaesong Talks
North Korea offered to reopen talks with South Korea over their jointly administered Kaesong industrial park, which Pyongyang has threatened to abandon. Yonhap reports representatives from the two countries will meet on the matter next week. http://m1e.net/
The Chosun Ilbo reports Washington and Tokyo are planning tough new sanctions against North Korea. http://m1e.net/
MYANMAR: The trial of pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been delayed another week (BBC). http://m1e.net/
SOUTH & CENTRAL ASIA: Pakistan Blast
A bombing at a mosque in a remote part of northern Pakistan, Upper Dir, killed at least forty people, al-Jazeera reports. http://m1e.net/
AFGHANISTAN: A candidate for Afghanistan'
TAJIKISTAN: EurasiaNet reports the Tajik currency is plummeting, weighing heavily on business owners and consumers. http://m1e.net/
AFRICA: Sudan Turmoil
IRIN reports the tenuous peace deal between North and South Sudan appears to be suffering strain as rivals from the two regions prepare for planned elections next February. http://m1e.net/
GUINEA-BISSAU: Security forces in Guinea-Bissau shot dead a candidate in the country's upcoming presidential elections (BBC). http://m1e.net/
AMERICAS: FDIC v. Citi
The Wall Street Journal reports the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is pushing for a major shake-up of Citigroup's top management that could lead to the ouster of CEO Vikram Pandit. http://m1e.net/
VENEZUELA: Prosecutors in Caracas brought charges against a TV mogul whose network Globovision commonly challenges President Hugo Chavez (Miami Herald). http://m1e.net/
EUROPE: Obama in Germany
Deutsche-Welle outlines the major sticking points in German-U.S. relations, coinciding with today's meetings between U.S. President Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. http://m1e.net/
