India's polio gains nurture hopes for further development

The victory over polio in India is a result of the work of the United Nations, the Global Polio Eradication initiative, the Indian government and the Indian people, write Ted Turner, founder of the United Nations Foundation, and N.R. Narayana Murthy, one of its board members. The success shows that countries can simultaneously accomplish economic and sustainable development, which India also is pursuing through two UN programs, Every Woman Every Child and the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative. "Infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and cholera are all but unheard of in most developed countries, but they are a devastating feature of daily life in many parts of the developing world. Cholera, a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and has the potential to kill within hours if left untreated, is currently endemic in many countries, and outbreaks can easily spiral out of control."

  • Annan is urged to set a timeline for Syria
Gulf Arab states Sunday agreed to pay monthly stipends to opposition fighters in Syria, as well as other costs of the rebel Free Syrian Army, while the U.S. -- in addition to $12 million in humanitarian aid -- will provide communications equipment to help activists organize, survive attacks and connect to the broader world. At a meeting in Istanbul of the Friends of Syria, a group of 83 countries backing political change in the country, United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was urged to "determine a timeline for next steps ... if the killing continues." • U.S. is urged to eliminate "tied" food aid
A new report estimates that U.S. food aid could have helped 17 million more people in 2010 if domestic laws hadn't required that the food be bought from American suppliers and transported on American ships. The monetization of food aid resulted in about 40% of U.S.-funded food aid being bought from just three companies and at least 75% being transported on U.S.-flagged ships, according to Oxfam America and the American Jewish World Service. • Decimation of bee population is linked to pesticides
A class of commonly used pesticides introduced in the 1990s are causing honey bee populations to plummet in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, according to research published in the journal Science. The findings are the first from open-air, realistic conditions to ascribe causes for what has become known as "colony collapse disorder."
