UNHCR forecasts a global jump in refugees

The number of displaced people worldwide is expected to increase in the coming decade not only because of conflict, but as a result of overpopulation, food shortages and natural disasters brought on by climate change, according to a report published Thursday by the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Last year marked the highest numbers of refugees in more than a decade. CBS News/The Associated Press (6/1) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"The organizers of Rio+Social are asking folks to help build the speech with a tweet, Facebook post, video or photograph, along any theme of sustainable development that addresses the theme 'The Future We Want.' Some of the selected contributions will be mashed-up in a crowdsourced six minute video that will be shown at the Rio+Social summit."

  • UN: Going green means more jobs, not fewer
Governments that pursue green policies create more jobs, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. A report from the agency estimates that between 15 million and 60 million jobs will be created in coming years as countries switch to more sustainable economic models, reducing poverty in the process. • UN rights body meets over Syria amid more deaths
Another mass murder of Syrian civilians by a pro-government militia was being reported as the United Nations Human Rights Council was meeting in an emergency session in the wake of the massacre last weekend of 108 people, mostly children and women. The UN Committee Against Torture said armed forces and militias were torturing civilians under the direct orders of the Syrian regime, while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that the country was nearing a civil war from which it "would never recover." A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is mobilizing against efforts to consolidate control of Internet infrastructure and content under the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union. "If this power grab is successful, I'm concerned that the next Arab Spring will instead become a Russia Winter where free speech is chilled, not encouraged, and the Internet becomes a wasteland of unfilled hopes, dreams and opportunities," said Rep. Mary Bono Mack. MSNBC/Reuters (5/31) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Competition for global aid continues to heat up
An increasingly competitive global aid marketplace is prompting mergers and acquisitions among contractors, as well as the positioning of private sector partners against not-for-profits and nongovernmental organizations. The competition has spawned a new lexicon of terms such as "modalities," "partner engagement" and "re-skilling." Devex.com (5/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The emergency law that permitted Egyptian authorities to detain people without charge, and stifle dissent, has been allowed to expire for the first time since 1981. The decision by the interim government not to renew the law is seen as highly symbolic in the wake of the revolution that toppled leader Hosni Mubarak.
