Algerian diplomat likely to succeed Annan as UN envoy

Lakhdar Brahimi, the veteran diplomat and former foreign affairs minister for Algeria, is considered the favorite to replace Kofi Annan as the United Nations-Arab League envoy to Syria. Nearly 150,000 people who fled the country's civil war are seeking UN assistance as refugees, while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that "no winner" will emerge from the year and a half of fighting.
