High food prices could portend new global crisis

Many poor people are already feeling the pinch of higher prices for food, and prices could rise for many more as a result of the heat and drought affecting farmers in the U.S. and Russia -- potentially triggering a repeat of the global food crisis of 2007-08. An analysis by the Global Information and Early Warning System of the United Nations identifies the most vulnerable populations. "This is not your everyday benefit concert. Tickets are not even being sold. They have to be earned. The point is, [The Global Festival] is not a charity concert. This is a political event."

  • African nations offer contrasting studies in AIDS fight
The divergent trajectories in the battle against HIV/AIDS in Uganda and Malawi were made more apparent during recent visits to both countries by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Twice as many people are infected today as were a decade ago in Uganda, the only country in sub-Saharan Africa that has seen an increase, whereas rates have fallen 13% over the past five years in Malawi. The decline is attributed largely to prevention and treatment programs. The Washington Post (8/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Nigeria's future hinges on reform of oil industry
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has delivered to lawmakers his plan to reform the country's notoriously corrupt and inefficient oil sector, but passage is uncertain, and inaction could bite into oil profits -- which constitute 80% of government revenue. An amnesty for militants in the Niger Delta has caused oil production to soar, but 200,000 barrels of oil are reportedly stolen daily from pipelines and wells. Young activists in Sudan have been beaten back by the government in their efforts to bring the Arab Spring to the country after 23 years of rule under President Omar al-Bashir, but they have not given up. There are numerous peaceful and armed protest groups organized for what observers say could be a long struggle. Reuters (8/7), IRINNews.org (7/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
