Former child soldier helps to free teen fighters in central Africa

Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier from Sierra Leone and a UNICEF advocate, discusses efforts to free 10 children fighting for rebels in the Central African Republic, where more than 2,500 boys and girls are believed to be working for armed groups, including the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army. Beah also discusses the transition facing teenage fighters. "You had this power of the weapon -- some of them were lieutenants -- and all of a sudden you're just a child again, trying to figure out what to do with your life," he says. "World historic news from WHO. 'The World Health Organization reports Guinea Worm disease, which has plagued people for thousands of years, is on the verge of eradication. The UN agency says fewer than 400 cases of the infectious parasitic disease exist in four African countries, and that it will soon become only the second, after smallpox, to be wiped off the face of the earth.' "

  • Australia lobbies Pacific island nations in Security Council bid
Australia is wooing a dozen Pacific island nations in the Pacific Ocean as part of its reported $25 million campaign to gain a two-year seat on the United Nations Security Council. Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga say they will vote for Australia on October's General Assembly ballot, but it remained unclear whether Australia would garner enough votes to edge out Finland and Luxembourg. • Mass scheme to link Australia-Europe carbon trade
The "cap-and-trade" systems of Australia and the EU will be linked under an initiative announced Tuesday, allowing Australian polluters to begin buying credits from European entities that pollute less by mid-2015, and European polluters buying from Australian entities by mid-2018. The system would be the world's largest, ostensibly helping to reduce carbon emissions more cheaply.
