UN's Amos arrives in Syria amid spike in violence

United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos touched down today in Syria, where the head of the world body's monitoring mission accused security forces and rebel fighters of imperiling the lives of civilians since the start of the popular uprising against President Bashar Assad a year and a half ago. The regional Organization of Islamic Cooperation moved to suspend Syria as it met for a two-day emergency summit, while the Arab League postponed its scheduled meeting on the crisis. Like his predecessor Kofi Annan, Brahimi is a member of The Elders, a group of eminent statesmen and women. In a statement, Brahimi said that, for the time being, the Security Council and regional states must work together to facilitate a political transition in Syria.
