Analysis: Don't get too excited about Ello
Ello supposedly offers a more flexible and less commercial alternative to Facebook, but the reality is that Ello isn't a serious rival, Caitlin McGarry writes. The site lacks many of the features that make Facebook attractive, and marketers appear confused about its appeal, McGarry writes. "Brands have already joined Ello, with Netflix encouraging its Ello followers to like the company on Facebook, thereby missing the entire point," she writes. PCWorld (9/29)

Measurement Matters
Facebook divides and conquers with Messenger
Facebook's decision to split its messaging service into a separate application is paying dividends, with the app scoring impressive download numbers and user-growth rates. That could prove lucrative for Facebook, writes Dan Frommer. "[I]f Facebook Messenger becomes the go-to mobile app for quick one-to-one and group communication, there's a real opportunity for new revenue streams, such as peer-to-peer payments," Frommer writes. Big Carl may be the grandest tuba of them all
Big Carl is an 8-foot-tall, 100-pound tuba created around 1900 for a New York sheet-music publisher. It takes three people to play the instrument, which reportedly makes a regular tuba look like a piccolo. "I saw it in person and I was speechless. I thought I might need another lung to play it," professional tuba player Derek Fenstermacher says. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (9/26)
