The Big Story
Twitter is testing direct purchases from within feeds
Twitter has announced that it's testing a "Buy" button with a few brands and a slice of U.S. users. Participating brands include Burberry, Home Depot and nonprofit DonorsChoose, with users able to make direct purchases after entering shipping and payment information. Verizon wants to make everything shareable
Verizon is launching a service called Auto Share that lets anyone turn their car into a shareable ride that can be unlocked by scanning a QR code on its windshield. The aim is to roll out the technology to other resources such as lawnmowers, hotel rooms or even mobile phones. "This is just our entrée toward developing a platform for a sharing economy where users can just walk up to any kind of shared resource and access it through Verizon," says Verizon exec Paul Bedard. Pity the aviation industry's social media managers
A new analysis shows that among airlines Virgin America has the most positive social buzz, while United Airlines gets the most negative mentions. All airlines, though, have a hard time keeping their social followers happy. "Searching Twitter mentions for any major airline is like slogging through a virtual customer service line that extends out to the tarmac," writes Kurt Wagner. Re/code (9/8)

Quick reflexes help Nissan take advantage of royal baby announcement
Nissan scooped its rivals by tweeting a photo linked to the British royal family's baby announcement just minutes after Prince William and wife Kate revealed the news. The photo showed a seven-seat Nissan X-Trail with a crown placed on each seat. "It could be triplets and there would *still* be enough room for the Queen," the tweet read. Creativity-Online.com (9/8)

Facebook woos mobile advertisers in Africa
Facebook has turned 10% of Africans into regular users of its service, with 80% of those users accessing the site via mobile devices -- and that's potentially a big target for brands' mobile campaigns, officials say. "Knowing that there [are] all these people now in Africa that you can connect with, that is exciting," says Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook's vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. On Twitter, the NFL demolishes other prime-time viewing
Last week, the NFL season got underway with a game pitting the Green Bay Packers against the Seattle Seahawks, and the social buzz surrounding the match showed the NFL's online strength. The game generated about 950,000 tweets, which were seen by over 8 million fans, according to Nielsen data, far more than the social buzz generated by other prime-time viewing. Harry Potter, hobbits and handmaids, oh my
A recent viral Facebook status update asked users to list their favorite books -- and the results make interesting reading, writes Robinson Meyer. There were plenty of nods for Tolkien and the Harry Potter series, but also for higher-brow works by Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Atlantic online (9/8)
