Inclusive development practices honor indigenous peoples
Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples when "we highlight the importance of honoring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements between states, their citizens and indigenous peoples," says United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The best way to honor indigenous people is an inclusive decision-making process, giving them a say in development issues, said Santos Mero, deputy secretary general of the Cordillera Peoples Alliance in the northern Philippines. "Just as we were seeing record-low cases of polio worldwide and coming closer than ever to eradication, 105 new cases of wild polio have been identified in Kenya and Somalia, raising new concerns about low coverage and inaccessible populations in that area. While the outbreaks are undoubtedly a setback, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) had anticipated that sporadic cases would occur in vulnerable settings during the final push for polio eradication, and it's noteworthy that the situation has been met with one of the quickest and most effective emergency responses to date." Coca planting falls 25% in Colombia as criminals turn to illegal mining, UN report shows
Colombia's coca planting dropped 25% in 2012 to 48,000 hectares, says the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime annual report. While the decline shows that Colombia's anti-drug efforts are working, crime gangs are replacing coca with illegal gold and emerald mining to finance their operations, analysts say. "Quality of growth" is important for Africa development, AfDB head says
Harnessing natural resources and improving infrastructure, including electricity generation, must be done in a way that is inclusive and quality oriented, Donald Kaberuka, president of the African Development Bank, tells Mark Tran. Aid shouldn't be forever, either. "Aid is not successful unless it has a sell-by date," Kaberuka says, adding "If aid does not stop, it will have failed." The Guardian (London) (8/8)

UN's Family Planning 2020 works to empower women in poorest countries
Family Planning 2020, which is part of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Every Woman Every Child initiative, is celebrating its one-year anniversary. FP2020 is working with donor countries to achieve its goal of bringing family planning methods to 120 million women and girls who don't have access now, although ultimately the group would like to reach every woman in the 69 poorest countries in the world. "If we even reached 120 million, we would not have reached the unmet need for contraception," says Valerie DeFillipo, FP2020's director. The InterDependent (8/9)
