Information on Speakers' Selection for General Assembly Special Event to Follow Up on Efforts on MDGs
NGLS has been requested to provide the President of the General Assembly (PGA) with names of nine potential non-state speakers (including civil society and the private sector) for the GA Special Event on MDGs on 25 September.  One for a secured slot in the opening panel and up to two speakers for each of the four high-level multi-stakeholder roundtable sessions.  Per the PGA's letter to Member States of 16 July, all roundtables will have the same broad theme focusing on gaps and weaknesses, and the acceleration of the implementation of the MDGs, as well as looking forward to the post-2015 debt agenda.

For the MDG Summits in 2010 and 2005, Member States agreed to modalities of engagement and secured funding for CSO participation. Given this mandate, NGLS has in the past facilitated a process of selecting a balanced list of CSO speakers through a task force of civil society representatives with the OPGA. As there are no such agreed modalities for this Special Event, the OPGA has very recently decided to move forward with the following process:

The UN Civil Society Focal Points (CS FP) will each nominate civil society speakers by 22 August. Please be mindful that the deadline for CSO registration for the Special Event is 19 August so any nominees would need to have registered online beforehand, here.

Based on the UN CS FP nominees, on 3 September NGLS will present to the PGA for his final approval a balanced list of 9 potential speakers based on criteria of gender, geography, generation, issue and constituency.  At this stage the OPGA will have a list of government speakers for each of the four round tables so will be able to determine how many (one or two) civil society speakers can be accommodated on each roundtable.

Please note that there unfortunately is no funding to bring civil society participants to attend this event.

Due to security constraints and space limitations, seating will be extremely limited, and subject to confirmation in early September.  Based on the list of registered participants, the PGA will allocate up to 25 seats to civil society following criteria of gender, geography, generation, issue and constituency.  An overflow room will be available to registered participants. Only one person per organization can be registered. The event will be broadcast live and on archive video at http://webtv.un.org.
