Russia on Saturday vetoed a France-proposed Security Council resolution on Syria that focused on Aleppo. Separately, France said it is exploring an International Criminal Court inquiry into possible war crimes committed by Russian and Syrian forces in Aleppo.

Guterres says he will "serve the most vulnerable"
Antonio Guterres, who was recommended by the Security Council to become the next secretary-general, said he pledges to "serve the most vulnerable, the victims of conflicts, of terrorism, of rights violations, of poverty, of injustices." His appointment awaits confirmation by the United Nations General Assembly.
