UN's de Mistura: Syrian rebel shelling of civilian area is possible war crime
The United Nations special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura is calling on Syrian rebels to halt their three-day shelling of civilian areas in Aleppo in an attempt to break the government's siege. The action is unjustifiable and could be a war crime, he contends.

Russia was voted off the United Nations Human Rights Council by the General Assembly on Friday for its role in the Syrian civil war. Hungary will replace Russia as the regional representative on the rights body.

Air pollution is particularly toxic to children and contributes to the death of about 600,000 children each year, says a report by UNICEF. Dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced and other efforts must be made to reduce children's exposure to air pollution, the report says.

UN mission in CAR calls on armed groups to stop aggression
The United Nations mission in the Central African Republic is urging armed groups to end "the cycle of attack and reprisal" that caused 25 deaths last week. Meanwhile, France is ending its peacekeeping mission in CAR, leaving about 12,000 UN troops in charge of peacekeeping in the country.
