[RED DEMOCRATICA] Coments .: What I didn't know about Haiti

 

You've probably heard that President Obama is going to ask Congress for supplemental funding to help Haiti.

But I just learned something else – that if the food aid is given in cash (instead of imported food) Haiti will be able to buy food from its own farmers and rebuild its country from the inside out.

For 30 years, Haitians have depended on imported food for survival. But it wasn't always this way. Before the markets were flooded with white rice subsidized by the U.S. government, most of Haiti's food was grown on the island itself. Now, President Obama's aid package could provide a way for Haitian farmers to restart their livelihoods and build a sustainable food supply for their people.

I just wrote Congress and asked my legislators to support the president's supplemental aid package – and to insist that all food aid to Haiti be given in cash.

But with Haiti's rainy season fast approaching – and more damage possible – Congress needs to hear from as many of us as possible, as soon as possible. Will you join me?
