Dignity on parade

For many, the national immigration march Sunday was about one thing: dignity.

Dignity — or "dignidad" — is a precious commodity in the Hispanic community. People will risk life and limb to preserve it. And it's an ugly insult to tell someone, "No tienes dignidad" (you have no dignity).

For immigrants — especially those without papers — their personal dignity is constantly under assault.

Within the Hispanic community itself, wives are abused by husbands who know they'll never summon the police because of legality issues.

Unscrupulous "coyotes" at the border charge a king's ransom to lead illegals into the United States.

Hispanic grifters constantly take advantage of the innocent and uninformed.

In society at large, the dignity of many Hispanics also takes a beating.

Businesses take unfair advantage of people who can't meet interest payments. Employers withhold money from illegal workers knowing they don't dare appeal.

Landlords constantly milk money from people without supplying contracted services and repairs.

The Sunday march was about all those things.

It was also about the things that make a person feel filled with dignity — a good job so the family doesn't go hungry, education so the children can get ahead and the right to walk in the sunshine with others.

Utahns can help the marchers in their quest.

First, it's important that the census correctly count the number of people — legal and illegal — living in the state. Brushing off residents as not worth the effort will not do. Every soul deserves to be counted. The state needs to know the numbers so funds can be requested or allocated properly.

But more than that, Utahns should take a cue from local religious groups that show compassion for the suffering. They are concerned about these strangers at sea in a strange new land.

Our dignity requires that we pay attention.

We can start by not judging but looking, instead, for ways to help folks along — especially the children and the senior citizens.

When the marchers chant "Si, se puede" (yes, we can), they are really chanting, "We can find the respect and acceptance here that will give dignity to our lives."

Others, within earshot, should heed that call and help.
