"POWER OF WOMEN" RECEPTION HONORING ASSEMBLYWOMAN ANNETTE QUIJANO

 

ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2010 FROM 6-10PM

 

Newark, NJ– The 6th Annual LUPE, "POWER OF WOMEN" reception honoring a Latina woman for outstanding achievement and for fostering the upward mobility and empowerment of women throughout the year, will be held this Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Solar Do Minho, 147 West Westfield Avenue in Roselle Park, NJ.  This historic event also celebrates the first African-American woman to serve as NJ Assembly Speaker the Honorable Sheila Oliver. Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, the first Hispanic and the first woman to represent the 20th Legislative District, will receive the "Power of Women" Award. Kay LiCausi will receive LUPE's "Amiga" Award.

Assembly Speaker Oliver will serve as keynote speaker and will represent the power of women as a "trailblazer."  She took the oath of office as New Jersey's 169th Assembly Speaker on Jan. 12, 2010.  She is the first African-American woman to lead a legislative house in New Jersey, and just the second one in American history.  She is the second woman to serve as Assembly Speaker in New Jersey.  Speaker Oliver, who presides over the 214th Assembly, was first elected to the Assembly in 2003.  Prior to joining the New Jersey Legislature, she served as an Essex County freeholder from 1996 to 1999, and served on the East Orange Board of Education from 1994 to 2000, including as president from 1999 to 2000. She represents the 34th Legislative District.

Assemblywoman Quijano will receive LUPE's "Power of Women" Award. This award is presented yearly to a Latina who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and who has participated in the upward mobility and empowerment of women. Assemblywoman Quijano serves as vice chair of the Judiciary and Regulatory Oversight and Gaming Committee, as well as serving as a member of the Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. She began her public career in her early teens when she led a protest to have a local cable station carry Latino programming. She is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents and resides in Elizabeth, NJ. Hon. Quijano graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Management and earned her Juris Doctor from Rutgers School of Law, Newark. She served clerkships at New Jersey Superior Court in Newark, and in Trenton at both the Office of the Governor's Counsel and the New Jersey Department of the Public Advocate in Trenton. She became the first-ever Latina Chief of Staff for Senator Raymond Lesniak and most recently, Asw. Quijano served as Assistant Counsel to three New Jersey Governors. She is a member of several civic and social organizations including the United Way Hispanic Advisory Council of Union County, the Governor's Working Group for Hispanic Affairs, a Legal Services committee in Elizabeth, and as a Commissioner for New Jersey's Congressional Redistricting efforts. One of her initiatives, "Come Grow with Us, Union County" establishes community gardens to serve and benefit local food pantries.

Kay LiCausi is president of Hoboken Strategy Group, Inc. She is a graduate of Rutgers University and a former Congressional intern and political assistant to various New Jersey elected officials including Senator Robert Menendez, Representative Robert E. Andrews, and Senator Robert G. Torricelli. Ms. LiCausi worked for the National Women's Political Caucus in Washington D.C. and is currently a successful businesswoman, consultant, lobbyist and fundraiser. She serves on the Board of LUPE PAC, and other women's organizations. Kay LiCuasi will receive the LUPE "Amiga" Award, LUPE's award bestowed yearly to a non-Latina woman for her support and ongoing commitment to the LUPE mission.
