Ban: "Entrenched poverty" lingers, harms societies
At least 700 million people between 1990 and 2010 were lifted out of poverty, but 1.2 billion people still live on less than $1.25 per day, said Ban Ki-moon, United Nations secretary-general. "[E]ntrenched poverty and prejudice and vast gulfs between wealth and destitution, can undermine the fabric of societies and lead to instability," he argues. About $66 billion each year would be needed to lift all people up to the $1.25-per-day income level, according to Brookings Institution research. The World Health Organization has declared Senegal and Nigeria to be free of Ebola. Meanwhile, in Liberia, the strain Ebola has placed on health care services means the country is vulnerable to other diseases, writes President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. "[C]ountries like Liberia need long-term investment to build up our health systems to prevent outbreaks of this scale from ever happening again," she argues.
