Dignity March 2010

Utahns to March for Immigration Reform

WHEN:          Sunday, March 21, 2010

TIME:            11:00 AM (march will begin at 12:00 pm)

WHERE:       City and County Building 455 South State Street in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT – The Utah coalition "Utahns for Immigration Reform" organizing committee anticipates thousands of Utah Latinos and supporters will march again in Dignity March 2010, Sunday, March 21, beginning at the City and County Building at 11 a.m.   People from across the state and region will gather to underscore the urgent need to enact immigration reform that is humane and compassionate.  The rally is expected to be the largest gathering since the April 9, 2006 march that brought an estimated 40,000 individuals to the city.

Dignity March 2010 will unite leaders and organizations representing various communities to demand leadership and courage from the U.S. Congress and President Obama to deliver on the promise of comprehensive immigration reform. Dignity March 2010 will also call for Utah policymakers and Governor Herbert to act justly toward immigrants living and working here.

The march, which will go to and from the State Capitol, begins at noon with pre-march activities starting at 11:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to wear white T-shirts to symbolize peace and justice for immigrants.  Some will travel from St. George, Logan, Wendover, Idaho and Wyoming.

More than 150,000 undocumented immigrants in Utah as well as countless relatives, friends, neighbors and employers suffer under an outdated and unwieldy immigration system.  Because immigration is integral to the public well-being of Utah communities and the state's most essential economic activities, reform is long overdue to resolve an issue that has lingered for decades.

Dignity March 2010, a local event tied directly to Sunday's March for America in Washington, D.C., is intended to send a powerful visual image to Utah's Congressional delegation.  The timing is critical considering that Congress seems poised to act on the issue in unprecedented substantial form.
