UNEP official: Only a "fundamentally different" approach will curb climate change
Countries need to pursue a "complete transformation" of their approaches to climate change, says Kaveh Zahedi, regional director and representative for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Environment Programme. "It's (an approach) where the energy we use will not cause the emission of greenhouse gases but also ... emit less methane that is affecting our crops, (and) emit less black carbon that is affecting the health of our people," Zahedi argues. Ethical, legal issues accompany reproductive advances
Progress in human reproduction is alleviating childlessness and unplanned pregnancy, but too often the ethical and legals concerns are given short shrift, writes Joseph Chamie, a former director of the United Nations Population Division. "Anticipated future medical breakthroughs in human reproduction make it even more imperative for the international community of nations to address the growing challenges and concerns regarding reproductive technologies and rights," he argues. Is better transportation connected to less poverty?
Sustainable transportation systems can boost development, but people must be the focus of such plans, says Jose Manuel Viegas, secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's International Transport Forum. "We've been building cities for cars [and] not for people. We need a change of perception," he argues. Devex.com (free registration) (10/1)
