Liberia border closed after attack on UN peacekeepers

Liberia has sealed its border with Cote d'Ivoire after the ambush Friday that killed at least seven United Nations peacekeepers and nine others near the Ivorian town of Tai, where civilians were under threat by an armed group. The gunmen responsible for the attack were suspected to have launched the assault from heavily forested Liberia. "It's a very tough time for the whole mission here right now," said Sylvie van den Wildenberg, acting UN spokeswoman in Cote d'Ivoire. "In yet another strike against Christian targets in Northern Nigeria, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a church service in the town of Jos -- a frequent site of sectarian violence. [A] statement from Boko Haram suggests that there will be no let up in the violence anytime soon."

  • UN relocates staff in violence-stricken Myanmar
Democratic reforms in Myanmar could be derailed by sectarian violence between Muslims and Buddhists in the country's west, President Thein Sein warned Sunday. The United Nations is temporarily relocating nonessential staff from the Rakhine state, where a state of emergency has been declared. • UN fulfills Syria mandate as world considers action
United Nations teams are proving essential to investigating crimes and assisting refugees as "objective eyes and ears on the ground" in Syria even as the world body's Security Council considers next steps. "While it is not observers' mandate to enforce a cessation of violence or compel the Syrian government to adhere to their commitments -- at least not yet -- observers are providing the foundation for the UN Security Council to move forward," writes Peter Yeo, vice president at the UN Foundation. • Violence persists over Brazil indigenous land rights
The violence spurred by the struggle over land rights between indigenous Guarani and landowners in western Brazil casts light on the historical debt of government policies. "In some ways, farmers and their children are today victims of a circumstance that has these historical roots," said James Anaya, the United Nations special rapporteur for rights of indigenous peoples. "What I've suggested is that the government of Brazil provide these titleholders with compensation. I think only by doing that, and recognizing the responsibility of the Brazilian state, ultimately for this mess, can the return of lands to the Guarani be achieved peacefully." • Tree regeneration boosting farm fertility in Sahel
Africa's Sahel is in its third drought in 10 years, but some farmers have managed to restore the sandy soils by planting and cultivating trees. The trees, traditionally seen as competing with crops, actually reduce the effects of winds, provide shade to manure-producing livestock and contribute organic matter to the soil. • Slave-labor culture in the Amazon
Tens of thousands of Brazilians are toiling across the Amazon, often for little or no money, in conditions observers characterize as tantamount to modern-day slavery. "But not one single person in the history of Brazil has been jailed for this crime. These men feel untouchable," said Luis Machado, of the United Nations International Labor Organization. • Al-Shabab members defect to peacekeepers in Somalia
Peacekeeping forces of the African Union continue to make gains against Islamist al-Shabab militants in Somalia. Such armed forces -- which cost considerably less than most United Nations-backed peacekeepers -- are increasingly considered as a model for resolving similar conflicts in Africa and elsewhere.
