Child mortality halved since 1990, UN report says
Globally, childhood deaths have been cut in half since 1990, says a report from UNICEF, the World Health Organization and World Bank. While countries in eastern and southern Africa have successfully reduced child deaths by 50% or more, those in west and central Africa have not. UNICEF estimates that 6.6 million children younger than 5 died last year mainly from malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon confirms that Syria has signed the 1992 international treaty banning use of chemical weapons. A draft United Nations report on climate change will indicate areas that have "very limited adaptive capacity" by using the color purple.
