Hispanic Heritage Month: Bicultural families in the United States

Bicultural Hispanics want to establish a good home environment for their families so that they can thrive.

By Yvette Stupart

September 15 marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began as a week of celebration in 1968. This is a designated time during which people stop to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the Latino heritage and culture.

The term Hispanic or Latino refers to "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race" (U.S. 2010 Census). Hispanics can be grouped as Hispanic-dominant, mainstream-dominant, or bicultural. Bicultural Hispanics can be defined as those who, although they strongly identify with their countries of origin, adopt the values, traits, and behaviors of mainstream America. More specifically, Hispanic or Latinos are seen as bicultural if they speak both the Spanish and English languages.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Celebrate traditions

Hispanic Heritage Month presents a great opportunity to teach Hispanic people and their children about their heritage, but it also help others to gain awareness of Hispanic or Latino culture and contributions. Biracial families understand and celebrate their traditions and ancestry, so the month of activities is important to them. But they value both the Hispanic and American cultures.
Hispanics who are bicultural seek to create a new identity for themselves as the Hispanic culture exerts more influence on mainstream America. Hispanic culture and traditions are important to them, but they also want to celebrate American traditions too . For example, they celebrate traditions like Noche Buena in their families, but they also want to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Helping Hispanic children succeed

A significant factor that could be contributing to many Hispanic families becoming bicultural is the need to facilitate their children's achievement and success in the American society. A study conducted by Professor Paul Smokowski of the University of North Carolina indicates that Hispanics youths are more successful if their parents are bicultural.
Smokowski explains that Hispanic children developed less anxiety and met fewer social problems when they had parents who had a biracial perspective. According to Smokowski, young Hispanics and their parents can benefit from being bicultural.

Hispanic influence grows

Increasingly, Hispanics in the United States want to have a choice between cultures, and enjoy the best of both worlds. The Hispanic population continues to grow; it rose from 36.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010, and its influence on mainstream America is also increasing . For example, some television commercials now reflect biculturalism in varying degrees.
Extended family and friendships are held in high esteem in the Latino culture; family members provide for and receive emotional and physical support from each other. Like other Latinos , bicultural Hispanics want to establish a good home environment for their families so that they can thrive. Also important to them is providing a secure future for their children.
